Aaron – his life and work so far

Aaron has devoted his life to innovating in his field, using his huge experience to help both patients, other professionals and organisations.

Aaron starts out

Aaron, at just 17 years of age, entered medical school at University College Dublin. He graduated in 1992 and was one of the very few who went on to train in surgery.

He moved to London in 1995 and entered higher surgical training in the London region. He is dual qualified in General and Vascular Surgery.

Aaron’s experience & career progression within the NHS

He was appointed as a Consultant Surgeon in 2002. He served the NHS in Lewisham, Greenwich, Bromley, Beckenham and Orpington.

He was also appointed as Consultant Vascular Surgeon to Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals. He was one of the few surgeons who provided a pro-bono vascular emergency service to South-East London and Kent. This involved being on call every third night. He transformed the Vascular unit at Lewisham into one of the largest in the country. He brought endovenous laser treatment (EVLT) to the NHS and offered this service to the neighbouring boroughs of Bromley, Sidcup and Greenwich.

He became the clinical director of surgery and was instrumental in the centralization of emergency vascular surgery. This unfortunately led to downgrading of University Hospital Lewisham as a vascular centre and resulted in Aaron leaving the NHS in 2014.

Aaron’s current extensive private practice

He continues to offer services privately in London and Kent. He was asked to become the consultant vascular surgeon to Benenden Hospital and transformed it to the largest provider of private varicose vein surgery in the UK. Many new techniques are named after him including “The Sweeney venous tumescence procedure” and “The Sweeney venous kink procedure” The Hospitals regularly audit Mr Sweeneys operations and approval ratings are >99%

He is consultant surgeon to the private BMI hospitals in Chelsfield park Orpington; The Blackheath Hospital; The Sloane hospital Beckenham; Shirley Oaks Hospital Croydon; and The Benenden Hospital in Kent.

He is currently the largest provider of laser varicose vein surgery in the UK

Aaron is married to Miss Karina Cox, The Consultant Onco-Plastic Breast Surgeon to Maidstone and Tunbridge wells NHS Trust. Karina is also the Chair of Breast Cancer Kent, one of the UK’s most successful breast cancer charities

He is on the Specialist register of Consultant Surgeons at the GMC

He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine
